Effect of UV dose on degradation of venlafaxine using UV/H2O2: perspective of augmenting UV units in wastewater treatment

Abstract: Many water and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are fitted with a UV system that provides post treatment disinfection before the water is released to receiving water. This paper presents a study on expected removal for the pharmaceutical venlafaxine (VEN) in a typical UV unit at a municipal WWTP with analysis of removal rates of an advanced oxidation process using UV irradiation with injection of HO. The study is supported by bench scale degradation experiments on VEN. Results demonstrated that UV can compl… Show more

“…While the final objective of oxidation treatments is the compete mineralization of organic contaminants, this may not be the result. Particularly for ozone treatment, lab-scale literature provides an indication that much of the total mass of PhACs measured continues to exist in some altered form, as indicated by low reductions in total organic carbon after treatment (Hollman et al 2018;Mehrabani-Zeinabad et al 2015;Rosal et al 2008;Somathilake et al 2018). Analytical methods for quantification of PhACs identify a reduction in a specific compound, but they are not capable of determining if by-products have been produced, even if the only change to the original compound is a simple functional group substitution.…”

“…While considerable data on the effectiveness of various treatment processes, especially advanced oxidation processes(AOPs), for the removal of PhACs can be found in the literature, almost all studies were conducted at lab or bench scale and very few reports exist that consider scaling of processes to address full-scale process effectiveness (Almomani et al 2016;Figueredo et al 2019;Hollman et al 2018;Mojiri et al 2019;Somathilake et al 2018). The complex matrix of treated municipal wastewater combined with very low PhAC concentrations and scaling issues make lab-scale data of low interest to designers and engineers who make decisions on process design in new municipal facilities.…”

“…This in-turn reflects the poor state of affairs of improper effluent treatment practices prevalent in many countries. VEN and its metabolites were not part of the above-described studies, and, therefore, we have selected them, considering the high probabilities of occurrence of these ecotoxic molecules in effluent water and their potential harmful environmental impacts [ 36 ].…”

“…The salient features of this method include minimum processing steps, the absence of secondary extraction steps or use carcinogenic solvents, and its robustness against excipients usually present in the aquatic environmental samples. The developed method was validated by using the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) Q2 guidelines [ 36 ], and potential applicability to detect and quantify VEN and VEN metabolites in pharmaceutical formulations was also tested, to expand the scope of method for future application to body samples.…”
