This study aims to determine the phenomenon of food security in South Sumatra Province. Food security is calculated using Shortfall/Surplus Index and Head Count Ratio. Binary Logistic Regression method is used to determine factors affecting food security. This study obtains data from National Socio-Economic Survey on March 2017 regarding average number of calories consumed by household per day, socio-economic characteristics of household, and household heads in South Sumatra. The Survey used total sample of 9,752 households consisting of 3,099 urban households and 6,653 rural households. The results of the study shows that using 2,100 kcal standard limit, most of districts in South Sumatra have entered safe food security limit. However, they have not entered safe food security limit using 2,500 kcal standard limit. Factors that affect household food insecurity in South Sumatra Province are caused by the number of household members and the education of household heads.

The pervasive implication of environmental and socioeconomic challenge(s) poses serious threat to nutritionalhealth and agricultural sustainability in Nigeria. This study adopts the UNICEF's conceptual framework of undernutrition to investigate factors influencing farming households' nutrition and the determinants of health status in the Southwestern part of Nigeria. The results presented here relied on data collected on households' environmental, socioeconomic , nutrition and health profile through multistage random sampling of 450 households selected from the Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria using well-structured questionnaires, out of which 420 with complete information was carefully selected and used. Descriptive statistics {percentage, frequency, mean}, anthropometric measure {Households' Dietary Diversity Scores {HDDS}} and inferential statistics {Poisson Regression and Logistic regression model} were used for the data analysis. The result shows that the farmers were ageing, given an average highest age of farmers in Oyo state (54.60 ±11.30 years) with highest average years of farming experience (19.57± 13.04) in Osun state while the average years of schooling were highest in Ogun state (10.28 ± 5.18 years).No waste removal (27.86%), littering (21.90%) and land degradation (21.67%) were the most identified environmental problems by the farmers. Furthermore, Poisson regression model was fitted to determine factors influencing farming households' nutrition status and it produced a good fit while Logistic model indicates the determinants of health. It was concluded that socio economic and environmental factors contributes to households' nutrition and health status in the study area. Promotion of informal nutrition and environmental-health education among farmers for sustainable agricultural system was recommended among others.

A comparative study of pre- and post-flood households’ food security statuses in South-Eastern Nigeria was performed to answer the question “Do floods affect food security?” Data were generated via a survey of 400 households in eight communities using stratified and random sampling methods. Households’ food security statuses were assessed using the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) and computed using a Rasch analysis, where households were divided into four categories, namely: food secure, food insecure without hunger, moderately food insecure with hunger and severely food insecure with hunger. The results show that flooding affects food security negatively by increasing the number of food insecure households to 92.8%, and the regression coefficient of −0.798 indicates a very strong negative effect of flooding on household food security. An odds ratio of 2.221 implies that households that have experienced flooding are 2.221 times more probable to be food insecure than households that have not. The implication of the findings is that flooding is capable of turning communities into food insecurity hotspots that would need long-term assistance to cope, and flooding is capable of hampering the achievement of Goal 2 of the SDGs.
