This study investigates a left-hemisphere (LH) advantage for the discrimination of fine temporal events within the auditory modality in 24 normal adults. Brief noise bursts were delivered monaurally to the left or right ears, half of which contained a gap lasting between 2 and 8 msec. Subjects were required to indicate whether or not the noise burst contained a gap. Research within this area has yielded conflicting results. It is possible that variations in gap position or the properties of the noise burst may have contributed to this conflict. The effect of gap position was investigated by systematically varying the position of the gap during half of the trials. White noise bursts were used to avoid the use of spectral cues. Reaction time, response bias, and response error measures revealed a right-ear (and hence LH) advantage for gap detection. Stable gap positions were recognized more accurately than variable gap positions. Gap position had no effect on the observed LHadvantage. These results suggest that the auditory properties of noise burst, rather than gap position, play an important role in the discrepancies observed in this area.Research into cerebral asymmetry has suggested that the left hemisphere (LH) and the right hemisphere (RH) of the brain have different capacities for the resolution of sensory information separated by fine moments of time. Some ofthe earliest research within this field was carried out by Efron (1963aEfron ( , 1963b). Efron's experimental paradigm required neurologically normal subjects to judge whether two bilateral stimuli delivered to the left and to the right hands were simultaneous or successive. Subjects tended to judge the stimuli to be simultaneous when the stimulus to the left hand was delivered shortly before the stimulus to the right hand. Efron accounted for these results with a model of hemispheric asymmetry in which the LH was absolutely specialized for temporal processing. Performance asymmetries between the hands were believed to be the result of delays associated with the trans-callosal passage of information from the left hand. These findings have been supported by research conducted by Mills and Rollman (1980) within the auditory modality. Using a bilateral presentation procedure, they found that stimuli delivered to the left ear were perceptually delayed relative to stimuli delivered to the right ear during temporal-order judgments.Asymmetries for temporal processing have also been observed in studies which have employed unilateral presentation procedures (wherein stimuli are presented to the same side within each trial). Laterality in the perception of non-stationary aspects of musical timbre was investigated in 54 right-handed non-musicians. Timbre di erences were produced by altering the amplitude envelope of a steady-state complex tone. Two single-choice tests with attention directed to one ear were usedÐa dichotic test and a monaural test with contralateral white noise. Dependent variables were reaction time and accuracy. Both tests showed a signi®cant left ear advantage for reaction time. For the accuracy variable, a signi®cant left ear advantage was found only in the monaural test. Results are brie¯y discussed in terms of their compatibility with the generally accepted notion that spectral and temporal integrations of sounds are primarily functions of the right and left hemisphere, respectively. #

Hemispheric asymmetries for tactile simultaneity judgments were investigated in 34 dextral adults. Pairs of vibrotactile stimuli with simultaneous or successive onsets were delivered unilaterally to the left or right hand. Participants made a forced-choice, bipedal response, indicating whether a stimulus was simultaneous or successive. The effect of hemispatial attentional biases was investigated, using ipsilateral (arms uncrossed) and contralateral (arms crossed) hand placements. Trialspresented to the right hand were associated with fewer errors and a trend for faster response times than were those presented to the left hand. There was no asymmetry in response bias. Manipulations of hemispace did not affect the right hand advantage. These results confirm the existence of a left hemisphere temporal-processing advantage but fail to demonstrate that the asymmetry is the result of a rightward attentional bias. The implications ofthese results for absolute and relative models of hemispheric specialization are discussed.Efron (1963a) conducted some ofthe first work specifically testing the proposition of a left hemisphere (LH) temporal-processing advantage. Efron required participants to make simultaneity judgments for pairs of stimuli presented in either the visual or the tactile modality. The stimuli were presented bilaterally, either to the left and right hands or to the left and right visual fields. The results revealed that simultaneity thresholds were lower when the right stimulus preceded the left than for the opposite order ofpresentation. Similar right-first advantages for bilateral visual stimuli have been reported by Corballis (1996) for simultaneity judgments and by S1. John (1998) for temporal-order judgments. Within the auditory modality, Mills and Rollman (1980) required participants to make temporal order judgments for a pair of clicks delivered bilaterally to the left and right ears. Calculation of thresholds, using a method of constant stimuli, revealed that the left stimulus needed to precede the right by 4.4 msec in order for simultaneity to be perceived. Efron (1963a) and Mills and Rollman (1980) accounted for the right-first advantage with an absolute model of temporal-processing asymmetry. This model assumes that simultaneity and/or temporal order judgments are carried out exclusively in the LH. Thus, when stimuli are directed to the right side, they are transmitted directly, via the contralateral connections, to the temporal processor in the LH. Stimuli presented to the left side take a similar time to be transmitted to the right hemisphere (RH). However, there is an additional amount oftime (r) required for the message to cross the corpus callosum to reach the LH.
