Effect of ultrasound pre-treatment in the anaerobic co-digestion of cattle manure with food waste and sludge

Abstract: This paper present a study of the effect of applying ultrasound pre-treatment in the production of methane when co-digesting mixtures of cattle manure with food waste and sludge. A series of experiments were carried out under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions in continuously stirred-tank reactors containing 70% cattle manure, 20% food waste and 10% sewage sludge. Ultrasound pre-treatment allows operating at lower HRT, achieving higher volumetric methane yields: 0.85 L CH 4 /L.day at 36ºC and 0.82 CH 4 /L.… Show more

“…The obtained methane yields due to the effect of the codigestion/pre-treatment were in accordance with the values reported in the literature (Bardia et al, 1996;Bouallagui et al, 2009;Cesaro and Belgiorno, 2013;Kaparaju et al, 2002;Lehtomäki, 2006;Lissens et al, 2003;Parawira et al, 2004;Quiroga et al, 2014;Verrier et al, 1987;Weiland, 2003). Quiroga et al (2014) conducted a study on the effect of ultrasound pre-treatment application when co-digesting mixtures of manure with food waste and sewage sludge.…”

“…Recently, anaerobic co-digestion (ACD) has become the most sustainable method for treatment of excess waste, particularly of manure [14][15][16]. The biogas generation capability is substantially increased by the addition of co-substrate; as a medium equilibrium and nutrient accumulation established [17][18][19].…”

“…Szczególne zainteresowanie badaczy związane jest z wykorzystaniem ultradźwięków o niskiej częstotliwości w zakresie 20÷40 kHz. Najwięcej prac dotyczy wpływu działania ultradźwięków na proces kondycjonowania osadów ściekowych [13][14][15][16] oraz wykorzystania rozłożonej pod wpływem działa-nia ultradźwięków materii organicznej na zwiększenie wytwarzania biogazu podczas procesu fermentacji [17][18][19], natomiast niewiele doniesień dotyczy wpływu ultradźwięków na procesy biologiczne.…”
