Effect of two formulations of recombinant bovine somatotropin on milk production and body condition of cattle under intensive management in Peru

Abstract: The effect of recombinant somatotropin (rbST) application in cattle has been demonstrated in temperate climate but very limited studies are available in tropical regions. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of the application of two different formulations of rbST on the milk yield and body condition of dairy cattle in a commercial herd under intensive production in Peru. We evaluated the application of 500 mg of active rbST in a zinc sesame oil (ZSO-rbST; n = 44) or vitamin E lecithin (VEL-rb… Show more

“…The response plateaued through mid- and late lactation at 3.6 kg/d [ 5 ]. Other reports have shown increases in the order, ranging from 2 kg/d up to almost 6 kg/d for multiparous cows [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. The multiparous peak lactation cows in the present study had a similar average response of 2.7 kg/d on the whole udder level to the bST treatment.…”

“…Bovine somatotropin (bST) is a naturally occurring hormone in cattle that can increase milk yield (MY) and improve lactation persistency. When recombinant bST is administered to dairy cows, it increases MY by 15–20% during the course of its effectiveness [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. The injection is administered starting between wk 9 and 10 of lactation and then every 14 days for the remainder of lactation; this increases the overall milk yield through lactation by 4.5 kg/d [ 5 ].…”

“…There are a number of natural products that have been utilized to improve milk and meat production, thereby reducing the amount of methane produced. An artificially produced hormone called Bovine somatotrophin (bST) can be introduced into dairy cows to increase milk production approximately by 3.2kg per day and thereby reducing the quantity of GHG per litre of milk (Gómez,et al, 2022)The use of medicaments to promote greater efficiency of production must be selectively done to promote healthy and safe animal products. Breeding is an important tool which can be exploited for reducing emissions from livestock production.…”
