Effect of Two Bathing Methods on Physiologic Parameters in Pediatric Intensive Care

Abstract: To determine the effect of traditional and disposable bed baths performed in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on the physiologic parameters of children. This research was conducted as a randomized controlled trial with children who were monitored in the PICU. It was found that the pulse and blood pressure immediately after the bath were higher for both bath applications and was the lowest 30 minutes after the bath ( p < .05). Children who used traditional baths had a lower body temperature than thos… Show more

“…On the other hand, it was found that the difference in fall in body temperature measured immediately after and immediately before the bed bath was greater in the traditional bathing procedure. In a study by Öz et al (2022), it was found that, similar to the result of the present study, body temperature measured after the traditional bed bath procedure was lower than the body temperature measured after the dry bed bath. It was thought that the longer time taken for the traditional bed bath compared with the dry bed bath may have caused a greater fall in body temperature.…”

“…Bathing is a part of the general hygiene care of individuals (Öz et al, 2022). Body washing, which is one of the needs of self‐care, provides personal hygiene but is something that patients in intensive care cannot achieve independently.…”

“…Bathing is among the daily care practices for newborns and has many benefits, but it has also been reported to cause destabilization and crying in vital findings (Öz et al, 2021). Bathing can lead to changes in heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation levels in infants and may result in various conditions, such as hypothermia (Bembich et al, 2017; Ceylan & Bolışık, 2018; Öz et al, 2021). In the present study, the body temperatures of all babies in both the experimental and control groups decreased after bathing.…”

“…Previous studies have reported that different bathing methods (disposable bed baths, swaddled bathing, immersion tub bathing) may be more effective in stabilizing post-bathing vital signs in infants compared to traditional bathing methods (Ar & Gözen, 2018; Çaka & Gözen, 2018; de Freitas et al, 2018; Öz et al, 2021). In the present study, pulse rate and respiratory rate were higher in the control group immediately after, 10 minutes after, and 15 minutes after bathing compared to the experimental group.…”
