Effect of traditional Chinese medicine (Sairei‐to) on monoclonal antibody‐induced proteinuria in rats

Abstract: The effects of traditional Chinese medicine (Sairei‐to) on monoclonal antibody (mAb) inducing proteinuria were examined. Four hundred, 200 and 100mglkg body weight (BW) of Sairei‐to and phosphate‐buffered saline (PBS) as a control were injected intraperitoneally into four groups of female Wistar rats every day from 5 days before intravenous injection of mAb to the end of the experimental period. The amount of urinary protein excretion was significantly suppressed in roughly a dose‐dependent manner. For example… Show more

“…Other Chinese herbs such as Rheum palmatum (chishao) [33], Salviae miltiorrhizae (danshen) [34], Astragalus membranaceus (huangqi) and Angelica sinensis (dangui) [35] could also have anti-oxidative activity and help to recover kidney function in ischemia/reperfusion injury or nephrotic syndrome. Moreover, a traditional Chinese herbal formula - Sairei-to (chailingtang) has been shown to have protective effects on kidney injury due to its suppression of mesangial cell proliferation [36]. Therefore, not only single herb but also combination of herbs has renal protective property.…”

“…Saireito also decreased urinary protein excretion in a rat model of subtotal nephrectomy 46,47 . However, Saireito did not provide any additional benefit when added to enalapril for renal protection in rats with subtotal nephrectomy 48 .…”

“…3,4 WKY rats were randomly assigned to groups such that the mean body weight in all groups was almost the same, and then 0.38 ml/100 g of antirat GBM goat serum was intravenously injected through the tail vein. The following day, 6.5 mg of goat γ-globulin was emulsified with Freund's incomplete adjuvant, and intracutaneously administered to the calces of the bilateral posterior limbs.…”

“…1,2 Previously, we and many other investigators have reported that Saireito was effective in various disease models in basic studies of kidney disease. 3,4 However, few studies have investigated its effects on renal edema. To clarify the mechanism of the effects of Saireito on edema, further basic studies should be conducted.…”
