Effect of Trace Amount Modified SiC Nanoparticles on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of ZA27 Alloy

Abstract

The Zn-Al (ZA) alloys which have exceptional physical and mechanical properties, outstanding casting properties, excellent machining performance, and lower manufacturing cost play important roles in the industry. Due to this excellent combination of properties, the ZA alloys could effectively and economically take the place of bronzes, aluminum alloys, cast irons, and steels for a variety of applications. [1,2] The ZA27 alloy is commonly used as foundry alloy.[3] However, when the temperature is above 100 °C, its properties deteriorates sharply. Consequently, strengthening and toughening of the ZA27 alloy by hard and thermostable ceramic particles have been considered as an impactful measure to improve the alloy. Most researches are focused on the reinforcement of ZA27 composite by adding various reinforcement particulates. Khan et al. investigated the microstructure abrasive wear correlation of in situ ZA27/TiC composites. [2] Abou El-khair et al. studied the microstructure and mechanical properties of squeeze cast SiC, ZrO 2 , or C reinforced ZA27 composites. [4] Miroslav et al. researched the ZA27 composites reinforced by Al 2 O 3 particles. [5] Girish et al. investigated the effects of graphite particles on the damping behavior of ZA27 alloy composite. [6]
