Effect of thermal aging on the crystal structural characteristics of poly(tetra fluoro ethylene)

Abstract: The residual effects of cumulative thermal aging on the crystal structural characteristics of the fluoro carbon poly(tetra fluoro ethylene) (PTFE) have been studied by X‐ray diffraction methods. The initial hexagonal arrangement of the PTFE chains in a 157 helical conformation is left unaffected by the exposures to temperatures (T), up to and beyond its melting point, Tm. The unit cell registers a residual anisotropic volume expansion. The anisotropy arises from the enhanced enlargement of the basal plane dime… Show more

“…A reduction in Nomex® fiber crystallinity measured by X‐ray has also been reported as a result of thermal aging 6. For its part, PTFE has been shown to experience an increase in crystallinity both when thermally aged below its melting temperature of 327°C9 and as a result of argon ion implantation 10…”

“…Thus, we can observe the light on the whole POF. The outer layer of POF can choose the medical polymer material, such as Poly Methyl Methacrylatemethacrylic Acid (PMMA) [30], [31], Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (PTFE) [32], [33], and others. The POF mainly includes two components: outer layer and central layer, and the schematic diagram is shown in Figure 2.…”

“…According to XRD observation [9], the initial hexagonal arrangement of PTFE chains is left unaffected by thermal exposure at 360 'C. But the unit cell registers a residual anisotropic volume expansion, IExternal Sample Electrodes which results in a decrease of real permittivity.…”
