“…[1][2][3][4] In charged vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB), one half cell is filled with a solution containing V 2+ ions, while the other half cell contains a solution with V 5+ ions. [5][6][7] During discharge, V 2+ is oxidized to V 3+ , and V 5+ is reduced to V 4+ . The opposite reactions take place when the cell is charged.…”

“…The electrocatalytic effect of CNTs in the VRFB was first reported by Zhu et al (2008). Recently, a new electrocatalyst phosphoryl ethanolamine (PHOS) doped CNT was reported by Noh et al (2018) in which the comparative performance of VRFB based on CNT, POH‐CNT, and carboxylic acid functionalized CNT (CR‐CNT) as electrocatalyst coated over the graphite felt were discussed. Due to the chelation ability of phosphate groups, low electron delocalization capability, and high acid dissociation constant, the POH‐CNT showed superior electrocatalytic activity toward VO 2+ /VO 2 + in comparison to CNT and CR‐CNT.…”

“…However, VRFBs have still some serious hurdles 23‐30 . First is the high cost of vanadium because this is a rare metal 23 .…”

“…V 5+ ions are precipitated when the operating temperature of VRFB is above 40°C, while the precipitation of V 3+ ions occurs when the temperature is below −10°C 24,25 . Third is that a catalyst is ultimately needed for incorporating the high performance VRFBs because only catalyst can overcome the slow redox reactivity issue of V 4+ /V 5+ redox reaction and the possibility of hydrogen evolution 26‐30 …”
