Effect of the Push-up Plus (PUP) Exercise at Different Shoulder Rotation Angles on Shoulder Muscle Activities

Abstract: [Purpose] Although the Push-Up Plus is a useful exercise method for shoulder stabilization, few studies have examined its effects at different angles of shoulder rotation. Therefore, the present study investigated the most effective exercise method for shoulder stabilization by analyzing muscle activities of the rotator cuff muscles at different angles of shoulder rotation. [Subjects] Fifteen healthy university students in their 20s were the subjects of this study. [Methods] Changes in muscle EMG related to sh… Show more

“…Previous studies have shown that shoulder joint positions could affect muscle activation 25 , 26 , 27 ) around the shoulder and the shoulder’s rotational strength 14 , 15 , 18 ) . The present study also found that the ER and IR strengths of the shoulder changed with the shoulder abduction angles in the scapular plane.…”

“…The functional length of the SA can change the contraction distance of the muscle, which affects muscle activity. Researchers 16,[31][32][33][34] have examined muscle activity using different hand orientations and at shoulder-flexion angles of 1108, 908, and 708 during the PUP exercise. Lee et al 16 reported larger SA EMG activity during the PUP exercise with the shoulder externally rotated than with it in neutral or internally rotated.…”
