“…Previous studies have shown that metalloproteases isolated from Serratia strains have anti-inflammatory effects and thus therapeutic properties (12,19). Proteolytic enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of peptide bonds are present in all organisms and are involved in a large variety of physiological and biochemical functions.…”

“…It is an effective drug for the treatment of breast engorgement (18) and relieves swelling and pain following maxillary sinus antrostomy (11). Serrapeptase is also used to degrade atherosclerotic plaque and fibrin on the inside of arteries (19,20). In general, this major metalloprotease has been identified in various strains of Serratia (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) and because of its economic significance, particularly as an anti-inflammatory agent (19), this enzyme is currently being produced commercially and under trade names: Serrapeptase, Aniflazym, Danzen, Serrazyme, Serracel and SerraGold is sold (16,18).…”

“…Several methods to control the immediate inflammatory response associated with head and neck surgery have been described and used, including the use of drugs such as analgesics [1][2][3], corticosteroids [3], antibiotics [4], and proteolytic enzymes [5], laser application [6], or physical therapeutic methods like cryotherapy [7] or manual lymph drainage (MLD) [8]. No single modality of management significantly prevents and/or significantly reduces the occurrence of swelling, pain and trismus without potential undesirable side effects.…”

“…Murugesan et al [40] carried out a randomized study on 110 patients to evaluate the usefulness of serratiopeptidase compared to dexamethasone in impacted lower third molar surgery. Postoperatively, 1 mg dexamethasone was given thrice daily in the first group and 10 mg serratiopeptidase was given thrice daily in the second group for 3 days.…”
