Effect of the probioticLactobacilli reuteri(Prodentis) in the management of periodontal disease: a preliminary randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Lactobacilli reuteri (Prodentis) alone and in combination with scaling and root planing (SRP) in a double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of volunteers with chronic periodontitis. Methods Thirty, otherwise systemically healthy, chronic periodontitis patients (19 males and 11 females, aged between 34 and 50 years) were included. The study period was 42 days. ‘Split-mouth’ design was used for the SRP, which was performed on day 0… Show more

“…Although probiotics have only included commensal bacteria and shown their usefulness as an adjunct therapy in chronic periodontitis, 21,22 P. gingivalis strains with a low virulence may be also used for the prevention of colonization or replacement of highly virulent P. gingivalis. The aims of the present study were to identify a P. gingivalis strain with a low virulence among clinical isolates based on its invasive ability and cytokine proteolytic activities, and to explore the preferential degradation of a certain cytokine by P. gingivalis.…”

“…The use of probiotics in oral care applications is gaining momentum [118]. There is increasing evidence that the use of existing probiotic strains can deliver oral health benefits.…”

“…However, the level of this reduction was higher in SRP + probiotic, and lower, in placebo (p <0.05). Probiotic, with or without SRP, reduced significantly P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. intermedia [118].…”

“…Only for black-pigmented anaerobic rods, which include most periodontopathic bacteria, a significant decrease was found [50]. A promising strain is also L. reuteri Prodentis, because not only antimicrobial, but also inflammatory, effects were found along with inhibition of plaque formation [51]. The reduction of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-8) in gingival crevicular fluid can be regarded proof of concept for the application of Lactobacillus reuteri in a chewing gum.…”
