Effect of the needle-free “intra dermal application of liquids” vaccination on the welfare of pregnant sows

Abstract: BackgroundIn commercial pig production, sows are often vaccinated several times per gestation period, resulting in reduced welfare. This preliminary experiment investigated whether the needle-free IDAL vaccinator improves welfare through reduction of stress markers, improvement of behavioural and health parameters compared to traditional needle-syringe method.ResultsTwo treatments (IDAL and NEEDLE) in 6 replicate pens of gestating sows (15 sows per pen) were evaluated using Porcilis® PRRS. The frequency of sow… Show more

“…Local ISR were observed in both vaccination groups until 28 dpv. In contrast, in a recent study, ISR after intradermal application of Porcilis PRRS were resolved by 28 dpv [ 21 ]. However, in consistency with other studies, using the intradermal route of vaccination, the observed ISR were of minor degree [ 20 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Pigs were scored as either active or inactive. The behaviours recorded from active pigs are shown in Table 1 and followed the methodology described by Temple et al [ 11 ]. Observations took place the day before and the day after the vaccination procedure, with three observations blocks per day for each pen (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).…”

“…A recent study reported differences in piglets’ vocalizations at the moment of injection between pigs vaccinated intramuscularly and intradermally, where piglets vaccinated intramuscularly showed a greater number of vocalizations with a longer and more powerful peak [ 10 ]. Furthermore, sows vaccinated intramuscularly were more fearful two days after vaccination than sows vaccinated with a needle-free system [ 11 ].…”

“…Dass die Art der Applikation der Impfung Auswirkungen auf das Wohlbefinden der Tiere hat und sich die intradermale Impfung in dieser Hinsicht als deutlich vorteilhaft erweist, wurde erstmals für tragende Sauen gezeigt (16). Andere Studien zu möglichen Auswirkungen der Applikationsart auf die Tiere bezogen sich bezüglich der intradermalen Applikation von Substanzen bei Ferkeln ab der 3.…”
