Effect of the Insect Growth Regulator CGA-72662 (Larvadex®) on Broiler Breeder Production, Hatchability, and Subsequent Chick Performance

Abstract: Broiler breeders were fed CGA -72662 ( Larvadex ) at dosages of 0, 30, 300, and 3000 mg/kg (ppm) diet in a standard breeder diet from 25 to 65 weeks of age. The 3000 ppm level was reduced stepwise to 1000 ppm from 25 to 27 weeks due to a significant increase in male and female mortality. Feed consumption did not differ significantly due to treatment. However, birds fed 300 ppm exhibited significantly improved feed conversion and increased egg production on a hen-day basis compared to those fed 0 and 30 ppm wit… Show more

“…Beginning at 24 weeks, a breeder ration (Brake et al, 1984) was fed to all treatments on a restricted basis. Feed intake, and therefore nutrient intake, was comparable during the 40-week production period that followed the prebreeder treatments (Table 2).…”

“…Recommendations of the primary breeder for feeding regimens and nutrition were followed during the growing phase to 18 weeks of age. The birds were moved to a curtain-sided breeder house at 18 weeks of age (Brake et al, 1984).…”

“…Fresh egg weight, egg specific gravity, and eggshell weight were determined (Brake et al, 1984) on each egg collected. Shell thickness at the equator and pore concentration at the small end, equator, and large end of the egg were determined on all eggs by the methods of Peebles and Brake (1985a).…”

“…Also the effects of synthetic compounds, as those used to control pests in poultry houses, on progeny performance have been investigated (Brake et al, 1984). It was clearly demonstrated that feeding hen with diets containing an insect growth regulator negatively affected broiler chicken performance.…”
