In this article, it is aimed to determine the daylight availability and luminous efficacy of global irradiance for Izmir, which has Mediterranean climatic conditions. Daylight availability and luminous efficacy were put forward by using existing valid models, including Aydinli Model, Perez Model, and IESNA Model. Yearly exterior illuminance levels have been estimated by the use of hourly data of the Meteorological Station of Solar Energy Institute. The models were compared in consideration with their luminous efficacies. Monthly average hourly exterior daylight illuminance levels estimated by Aydinli Model, Perez Model, and IESNA Model were put forward for Izmir. Frequency distributions of luminous efficacies (lm/W) for hourly values calculated by these theoretical methods were evaluated. The frequency distributions were examined in consideration with the reference value referred to in the literature. Yearly correlations between hourly average daylight illuminance by Aydinli Model, global illuminance by Perez Model, daylight illuminance by IESNA Model, and measured hourly global solar irradiance were established and determined to be able to estimate daylight availability data for Izmir. According to these correlation equations, it is shown that the linear correlation coefficients (R 2 ) are 0.9536 for Aydinli Model, 0.9994 for Perez Model, and 0.9747 for IESNA Model. Finally, the potential of daylighting and the feasibility of natural lighting systems for Izmir were evaluated according to these results.

Daylighting design has become prevalent in modern buildings in the effort to create a more sustainable living environment. Past and recent bodies of research emerged are mainly focused on the different methods of predicting and measuring daylight level and various range of daylighting technologies available. Despite a wide range of developed and commercially available daylighting systems have been reported, their applications have been limited by a lack of studies on their utilisations and high initial costs. Computer simulations have been frequently used in the past to investigate daylighting performance due to reliable and accurate predictions. However, additional simulation time and variable level of skills and knowledge required are major drawback of computer simulations. This paper includes and pools information on all major daylighting design topic in the built environment. The study critically reviews and compares daylighting design principles, strengths and weaknesses of different range of daylighting systems and calculation methods, such as, scale model with artificial sky, full scale model for field measurement, numerical modelling and manual calculation procedures with the aid of diagrams or tables. Such information could be of useful for engineers, researchers and designers to assess the suitability of applying these systems and technologies in different building types and examine the potential of energy and cost savings.

With the increase in the use of daylight in architecture, providing visual comfort values as well as physical and psychological effects on people and minimizing the lighting energy need of the building have become important in terms of design. Today, with the development of daylight technologies, economic light tubes have become popular in Architecture. Light tubes have become an effective method in Architecture in terms of energy efficiency to illuminate areas of a building that are exposed to limited sunlight. In addition, people prefer to use daylight by nature. Therefore, the use of light tubes continues to increase in buildings with modern architecture. However, due to architectural design and necessities, daylight is used in a limited way in interior areas. While architects determine the position of the light tubes in the building in order for daylight to reach the dark and dim spots of the buildings, knowing the Illuminance level performance of the positioned light tubes has become a necessity for efficient use. In the study conducted to solve this problem, the Daylight Factor Method specified in the European Union EN 17037:2018 Standard was used in the use of light tubes. As stated in the relevant standard, the methods in the daylight factor value ISO 15469:2004 were used. The evaluation of the buildings in terms of daylight performance was calculated in the simulation environment according to the horizontal luminance of the daylight openings. With the designed simulation, the values in the conditions specified in the criteria related to the light tubes are provided. In this way, a light tube that provides energy efficiency is compatible with the circadian rhythm and is compatible with the architecture of this building, and optimum illuminance level values have been determined for the warehouse, which is the subject of the study in the simulation environment.
