Effect of the extract from custard apple (Annona squamosa) leaves prepared with pulsed electric field‐assisted process on the diversity of microorganisms and shelf‐life of refrigerated squid rings

Abstract: Antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of ethanolic custard apple leaf extract (CALE) prepared without and with pulsed electric field (PEF) assisted process (6 kV cm −1 , 300 pulses, 142 kJ kg −1 for 5 min) (PEF-CALE) were comparatively investigated. PEF-CALE showed higher bacterial inhibition against Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, compared to CALE. Antibiofilm properties of both extracts towards the aforementioned bacteria were augmented with increas… Show more

“…Phenolic compounds have the ability to react with cell membrane by interfering with normal cell wall balance, leading to the leakage and infiltration of other compounds. The extract also affected internal organelles, which caused inhibition of growth of bacterial cells (Abuga et al ., 2020; Olatunde et al ., 2021). Since GK and RK extracts had highest TPC, they plausibly had the highest inhibition effect toward the tested bacteria than LP and SS counterparts ( P < 0.05).…”

“…Phenolic compounds are substances occurring naturally in many plants, such as vegetables, fruits, spices, herbs, and whole grains and have antioxidant and antimicrobial activities (Olatunde et al ., 2021). Tannins, flavonoids, gallic acid, catechins, etc, have been reported in plants at varying levels depending on type of plant, maturation, etc.…”

“…Those specific perishable organisms (SSOs) can grow quickly and produce metabolites at low temperatures [ 34 ]. P. aeruginosa was found in tilapia sashimi [ 35 ], squid rings [ 36 ], and smoked salmon [ 37 ]. For rainbow trout fillets, Shewanella sp.…”

“…The antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of the ethanolic extract derived from custard apple leaf have been demonstrated. When custard apple leaf extract was combined with PEF it showed better bactericidal properties against Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Olatunde et al, 2021). It was recorded that the custard apple leaf (400 mg/kg) pre-treatment before PEF extended the shelf life of refrigeratedsquid rings more than 6 days (Olatunde et al, 2021).…”
