Effect of the composition ratio of copolymerized poly(carbonate) glycol on the microphase‐separated structures and mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomers

Abstract: Randomly copolymerized poly(carbonate) glycols were employed as starting materials for the synthesis of polyurethane elastomers (PUEs). The poly(carbonate) glycols had hexamethylene (C 6 ) and tetramethylene (C 4 ) units between carbonate groups in various composition ratios (C 4 /C 6 ϭ 0/100, 50/50, 70/30, and 90/10), and the number-average molecular weights of these poly(carbonate) glycols were 1000 and 2000. The PUEs were synthesized with these poly(carbonate) glycols, 4,4Ј-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and… Show more

“…I(C=O free )/I(C=O) of both PU films at 74 exhibited larger magnitude in comparison with that at 10 . The electric field vector of incident infrared beam is almost perpendicular to the film surface at 74 and the transition moment of the carbonyl stretching band is perpendicular to the molecular axis.…”

“…There has been reported some factors to control the microphaseseparated structure. A polymerization method, 13 thermal treatment 3,14 and chemical structures of raw materials including molecular weight [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]15,16 can be given as examples. First, by changing the polymerization method, one can control the primary structure of the PUs.…”

“…The polycarbonate based thermoplastic polyurethanes (CPUs) are becoming popular these days due the excellent resistance to heat, hydrolysis and ultraviolet radiation in comparison with the ether series. 14 In this study, the polycarbonate based thermoplastic polyurethane (CPU2) adduct was prepared and thin film coated onto the PA 6 fibers, the performance of the same was characterized by various methods. Figure 1 shows the raw materials used for the study.…”

“…Polyether and polyester macrodiols are commonly used in a wide range of commercial applications due to their affordable price. In contrast, polycarbonatediol (PCD) derived TPUs depict improved water and organic solvent resistance, high mechanical strength and high heat-resistance, at the expense of an increase in the price Kojio, et al, 2004;Tanaka, et al, 2002). Due to their inherent properties they are used for specific applications as artificial and synthetic leathers, thermoplastics, elastomers, paints and adhesives, where high reliability is required.…”
