Effect of the Compactness on the Texture and Friction of Asphalt Concrete Intended for Wearing Course of the Road Pavement

Abstract: Maintaining good friction performance of highway pavement is important for road safety. The friction is affected by many factors, and the present study investigates the effect of the compactness on the texture and friction of asphalt concrete during the polishing process. Two three-dimensional (3D) texture parameters and the mean texture depth (MTD) were used to characterize the surface texture of AC-13 asphalt concrete. The differences of surface texture are then being analyzed among the pavement in the field… Show more

“…In order to limit the complexities of simultaneously considering the effect of variable weather conditions (i.e., both temperature changes and variable surface conditions), it was decided to adopt a constant temperature for the current stage of investigation. This temperature was set to 20 • C, which is the mean approach for a typical range of room temperatures (e.g., 15-25 • C) that have been also used for other similar investigations (e.g., [59]). In its generalized form, the wetting protocol that was followed for the laboratory simulation of the weather conditions on the fabricated specimens is shown in Figure 11 and described in detail thereafter.…”

“…Different gradations of permeable asphalt mixtures produce different pore characteristics; thus, they have different sensitivities to the particle sizes of blockages, and different particle size compositions of the blockages also have different effects on the blockage [31]. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the gradation composition of the blocking particles and to simulate the most severe case of blocking of permeable asphalt pavements.…”

“…Many scholars have researched the relationship between road surface texture structure and skid resistance performance [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. The related theories, design ideas, technical methods proposed have far-reaching effects on the research of the skid resistance mechanism of asphalt pavement and the reduction in traffic accidents, and also proved that the surface texture significantly affects the skid resistance of the pavement.…”
