Effect of the Administration of PGF2α Analogue to Extended Boar Semen on Sperm Motility, Morphology and Kinematic Parameters

Abstract: The addition of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) to boar semen prior to insemination improves the conception and farrowing rates in sows. It is accepted that this is due to increased myometrial contractility, which improves the spermatozoa movement. However, there are limited data about the effect of the exogenous PGF2α analogs on sperm motility parameters and morphology. The aim of the current study was to define if there are changes in motility, morphology and kinematic parameters of spermatozoa on 1 st and 24 th h… Show more

“…Pandur and Pacala [18] reported that the addition of 1 ml of PGF2α (Dinolytic®; Pfizer;5 mg PGF2α/ml) to 100 ml of semen from Landrace wild boars after dilution increased sperm motility. These results were different from what was reported by Chervenkov et al [29] that the addition of PGF2α (Oestrophan, Bioveta, CZ) with the doses of 6 and 12 μg/ml into semen diluent had no effect on the motility and speed of spermatozoa movement of Danube wild boar after 1 hour and 24 hours post-treatment.…”

“…The decrease in spermatozoa motility after in vivo administration of PGF2α did not only occur in Gembrong goats but also in other animals [16]. Chervenkov et al [29] reported that the administration of PGF2α (Oestrophan, Bioveta, CZ) with the doses of 6 and 12 g/ml in porcine semen had no effect on motility and percentage of sperm motility of Danube wild boars. The same results were also reported by Maes et al [30], in which there was no increase in motility and kinematic parameters of Pietrain wild boar spermatozoa after the addition of PGF2α (Dinolytic; Pharmacia AnimalHealth; 5 mg PGF2α/ml) with the doses of 2.5; 5; or 10 mg PGF2α to 100 ml spermatozoa diluent.…”
