Effect of the addition of fly ash on the specific methane production and microbial communities in the anaerobic digestion of real winery wastewater

Abstract: BACKGROUND Fly ash is an important source of trace elements that can act as cofactors of enzyme systems and improve anaerobic digestion processes. However, its effect on anaerobic digestion using real wastewater has not yet been studied. In the present work, the effect of fly ash on the anaerobic digestion of real winery wastewaters was studied, by means of specific methanogenic activity assays and with a special focus on its effect on the specific methane production and the microbial communities present. Five… Show more

“…However, in this study, the FA (100 ppm) amended stage 2 anaerobic process with 70% GM and 30% SG yielded lower biomethane (Figure 2f) than the anaerobic medium adapted from Moody et al [58]. Lauzurique et al [59] stated that 25 ppm FA enhanced methane production while 100 ppm inhibited it by 20%. It may be due to the imbalance of trace elements or calcium (Figure 3) by adding FA [60].…”

“…The ClO 3 − ion can be formed by the chemical reaction between the ClO − ion and the hypochlorous acid (HClO) (reaction ( 9)) or by direct oxidation of the ClO − ion on the electrode without the action of the hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) (reaction (10)).…”

“…In general, this industrial effluent has a high organic load that may lead to contamination if not treated correctly [6]. In addition, winery wastewater has a high concentration of suspended solids, low content of nutrients, and recalcitrant high molecular weight compounds such as polyphenols, fertilizers, and pesticides [7][8][9][10]. These compounds are not easily removed by the biological processes normally used to treat this type of wastewater, which makes it difficult to achieve a high removal of organic matter [11,12].…”
