Effect of thalidomide in combination with gemcitabine on human pancreatic carcinoma SW-1990 cell lines in vitro and in vivo

Abstract: Abstract. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most frequently occurring malignancies worldwide and it is the fourth most common cause of cancer-associated mortality in Western countries. Thalidomide (THD) plays an important role in tumor therapy, as it is able to promote early stage apoptosis and inhibit the process of angiogenesis. The present study evaluated the ability of the combination of THD and gemcitabine (GEM) to inhibit the growth of the pancreatic cancer SW-1990 cell line in vitro and in vivo. Early apo… Show more

“…However, there are little or no effective benefits obtained from mono-therapies with thalidomide or its analogs in the treatment of solid tumors. Recently, thalidomide combined with typical chemotherapeutic drugs or immunomodulatory drugs showed curative effects in pre-clinical studies of tumor and leukemia [ 30 , 31 ]. Our presented study developed a combination of thalidomide with icotinib which showed distinctly synergic cytostatic and pro-apoptotic effects in lung cancer cells.…”

“…2B ). BCL-2 is an anti-apoptotic protein, whereas BAX promotes apoptosis ( 37 ). In the present study, the protein expression levels of anti-apoptotic protein BCL-2 were downregulated with increased THD concentration, whereas the protein expression levels of pro-apoptotic protein BAX and cleaved-caspase-3 were upregulated compared with the control group ( Fig.…”
