Effect of temperature and time for the production of polylactic acid without initiator catalyst from lactide synthesized from ZnO powder catalyst

Abstract: Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer that most importance at the present due primarily to its properties as biological degradation and biocompatibility derived from renewable resources. This study investigated the role of zinc oxide powder and tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate as the catalysts for lactide and PLA synthesis, respectively. Polylactic acid was obtained by four stages: dehydration, oligomerization, depolymerization and ring opening polymerization. The catalyst was added and water was removed at… Show more

“…22 The preparation of PLA through direct melt polycondensation of lactic acid primarily focuses on optimizing the polymerization reaction and improving the process conditions. 23,24 Furthermore, the activity of the catalyst significantly influences the molecular weight and yield of PLA synthesis. Among the range of catalysts, tin-based catalysts are typically employed in PLA synthesis, owing to their high catalytic activity and exceptional selectivity.…”
