Effect of Telmisartan in the Oxidative Stress Components Induced by Ischemia Reperfusion in Rats

Abstract: The therapeutic effects of telmisartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) agonist, have been demonstrated in several disorders. It has antioxidant and immune response modulator properties and has shown promising results in the treatment of an ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) lesion. In this study, a skeletal muscle (right gastrocnemius muscle) I/R lesion was induced in rats and different reperfusion times (1 h, 24 h, 72 h, 7-day, and 14-day subgroups) w… Show more

“…The antioxidant properties of telmisartan have been demonstrated recently in different settings. In a rat skeletal muscle ischemia reperfusion study, telmisartan enhanced the SOD and catalase (CAT) scavenging activities, and in parallel, decreased the oxidative products [ 57 ]. The neuroprotective effect of telmisartan in a setting of high glucose (HG)-elicited oxidative damage in PC12 cells was mediated via PPAR-γ activation and included elevation of SOD and CAT levels and decrease in MDA level [ 58 ].…”

“…Rodríguez‐Lara et al. (2019) reported that telmisartan increases the activity of the antioxidant enzymes, possibly by being a partial agonist to peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor‐γ (PPAR‐γ). Activation of PPAR‐γ receptors leads to induction of the extracellular signal‐regulated kinase–mitogen‐activated protein kinase cascade, which in turn induces differentiation of macrophages with increased expression of CD36 which increases the survival of the cells under oxidative stress (Sekulic‐Jablanovic et al., 2017).…”

“…This crucial role of ROS in IRI is underlined by many studies that generally showed a protective effect of antioxidant therapies during ischemia–reperfusion of skeletal muscles [ 1 , 10 ]. Accordingly, oxidative skeletal muscles are less prone to IRI damages than glycolytic ones, thanks to their antioxidant pool [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”
