This work is devoted to the study of the progress in various areas of additive manufacturing technology usage - from the first theories of layer-by-layer manufacturing to modern additive manufacturing technologies. Additive manufacturing technologies are some of the most rapidly developing sectors of manufacturing, maintaining significant interest of the scientific community due to the their represent of both an alternative manufacturing method for existing structures, as well as opening up opportunities for the development of new structures with structural complexity unattainable for traditional technologies. During historical review of the development and implementation of various technological processes in additive manufacturing for metals, a gap in compiling a comprehensive picture of the general development of additive manufacturing technologies in metallurgy was discovered. For a better understanding and systematization of knowledge about additive manufacturing, on top of answering a number of common questions about these technologies, an analysis of publicly known knowledge about their historical applications in the leading countries of the world was conducted. A number of additive manufacturing technologies were considered, such as Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing, Selective Laser Sintering, Selective Laser Melting, Electron Beam Melting, and Laser-Engineered Net Shaping. The study focused on the developments carried out by various countries of the world in the 20th and 21st centuries by scientists from such countries as the USA, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, the USSR and others. The main documents for the initial research efforts for each family of additive manufacturing processes and various applications of these technologies - from topography and stereolithography to modern medicine with the aerospace industry ‒ were reviewed; their main findings, breakthroughs and challenges were discussed. An analysis and classification of previous studies that focus on the development of various technological processes and their implementation was carried out. As a result of the analysis, a systematized approach to the creation of a comprehensive scheme for the development of additive technologies related to the development of technologies in various directions was proposed.

Most of the complex details of modern technical products are manufactured on CNC equipment. The threaded surface is one of the most critical elements of such parts. Their reliability and durability largely depend on the accuracy of the machining process. Machining threaded surfaces requires precise synchronization of periodic tool movements with the continuous rotation of the spindle. Ensuring smooth movement along the transverse axis with a synchronized approach to the machined surface is one of the important tasks. A variant of solving this problem in a two-level CNC system is proposed. A mathematical model of the movement along the transverse axis with a smooth variation in acceleration has been developed. A technique is proposed using an S-shaped feed profile based on the sin² function, which provides ease of calculation and high accuracy. The model is implemented in a two-level CNC. The results of experimental studies are shown that servo error decreases to a value of the order of 0…-1 μm before the end of the approach section, outside the workpiece.

To provide the quality of the surface layer and improve operational properties, a combined laser-ultrasonic surface hardening and finishing technology of steel products is proposed. This work is devoted to determining the range of rational parameters of laser heat treatment and ultrasonic impact treatment for enhancing the complex hardening process of AISI 1045 steel and AISI D2 steel. Laser surface transformation hardening was carried out with a constant temperature strategy using a fiber laser and scanning optics at a heating temperature of 1200–1,300 °C and a processing speed of 40–140 mm/min. Ultrasonic surface hardening and finishing were performed on technological equipment with an amplitude of ultrasonic vibration of 18 μm and a load of the ultrasonic tool of 50 N. The ultrasonic treatment duration varied from 60 to 180 s. The results showed that laser-ultrasonic treatment leads to an increase in the hardening intensity by more than 200 %, forming a hardening depth of 200–440 μm. Combined treatment leads to a significant increase in wear resistance due to the formation of ultrafine-grained martensitic microstructure with hardness (58–60 HRC5) in the near-surface layer. The combined laser-ultrasonic hardening process control algorithm for surface treatment of structural and tool steels is proposed, limiting the heating temperature, the duration of laser (ultrasonic) exposure, and the vibration amplitudes of the ultrasonic horn. Laser-ultrasonic treatment will allow the formation of a surface layer with a given set of properties, providing increased wear and corrosion resistance. The developed technology can be used for surface hardening and finishing of large-sized steel products in the mechanical engineering industry.
