Prevalence and associated factors of low back pain among taxi drivers in Gondar City, Northwest Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study

ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the prevalence of low back pain and associated factors among professional taxi drivers.DesignCommunity-based cross-sectional study.Setting and participantsA Modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to collect data. Through a simple random sampling technique, 371 taxi drivers were selected in Gondar City, Ethiopia.Data analysisSPSS V.22 was used for data analysis. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify the factors associated with low back pain. A p value less than 0.05 and an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% CI were used to declare statistical significance.ResultA total of 371 respondents, with a response rate of 95.4%, have participated. The past 1 year and week’s prevalence of low back pain among taxi drivers was 85.7% (95% CI 82.5 to 89.2) and 53.4% (95% Cl 48.0 to 58.5), respectively. Overweight/obese (AOR=0.33, 95% CI (0.14 to 0.80)), alcohol drinking (AOR=4.77, 95% CI (1.16 to 19.5)), job dissatisfaction (AOR=4.58, 95% CI (1.39 to 15.2)), prolonged working hours per day (AOR=2.64; 95% CI (1.02 to 6.08)), not using the adjustable seat with back support (AOR=6.38, 95% CI (2.39 to 17.01)) were associated with low back pain among taxi drivers.ConclusionThe prevalence of low back pain among taxi drivers was high. Being overweight/obese, alcohol drinking, job dissatisfaction, prolonged working hours per day, and not using adjustable seats with back support, were factors associated with low back pain among taxi drivers. Therefore, ergonomic and behavioural-related awareness training is recommended to minimise the burden of low back pain among taxi drivers.

Background:The serratus posterior inferior (SPI) muscle originates from the spinous process of T11-L2 and inserts at the lower border of the 9-12th ribs. This muscle is involved in thoracolumbar rotation and stability. Several positions can be used to improve trunk stability; the quadruped position is a good position for easily maintaining a neutral spine. In particular, during one arm lifting, various muscles act to maintain a neutral trunk position, and the SPI is one of these muscles. If trunk stability is weakened, uncontrolled trunk rotation may occur at this time. Tape can be used to increase trunk stability. There have been no studies on the effect of taping applied to the SPI muscle on thoracolumbar junction (TLJ) stability.Objects: This study compared the TLJ rotation angle between three different conditions (without taping, transverse taping, and SPI muscle direction taping).Methods: Thirty subjects were recruited to the study (18 males and 12 females). The TLJ rotation angle was measured during one arm lifting in a quadruped position (ALQP). Two taping methods (transverse and SPI muscle direction taping) were applied, and the TLJ rotation angle was measured in the same movement.Results: SPI muscle direction taping significantly reduced TLJ rotation compared to that without taping (p < 0.001) and with transverse taping (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference in the TLJ rotation angle between transverse taping and SPI muscle direction taping (p < 0.017). Conclusion:SPI muscle direction taping reduces the TLJ rotation angle during ALQP. Therefore, SPI muscle direction taping is one method to improve TLJ stability and reduce uncontrolled TLJ rotation during ALQP.

Purpose: Biofeedback using various ways has helped correct the sitting posture. This study compared the multifidus muscle activity, pelvic and 2nd sacrum tilting angle during typing in nonspecific lower back pain (NCLBP) subjects with and without visual biofeedback. Methods: Thirty subjects with NCLBP were enrolled in this study. An electromyography device was used to measure the multifidus muscle activity. An electromagnetic tracking motion device was used to measure the pelvic and 2nd sacrum tilting angle. The multifidus muscle activity, pelvic, and 2nd sacrum tilting angle were measured before and after typing for 30 minutes in the sitting position. An independent t-test was used to compare the changing values for 30 minutes between the group with and without visual biofeedback. Results: The changing values of the multifidus muscle activity, pelvic, and 2nd sacrum tilting angle were significantly smaller in the group with visual biofeedback than the group without visual biofeedback (p< 0.05). Conclusions: In subjects with NCLBP, the visual biofeedback can be recommended to maintain the multifidus muscle activity, pelvic, and 2nd sacrum tilting angle during typing for 30 minutes.
