Effect of sympathectomy on microvascular anastomosis in the rat

Abstract: An operative technique of lumbar sympathectomy in the rat is described. Two days following either sympathectomy or sham-sympathectomy, bilateral femoral arterial anastomoses were performed by a 1-year trained microsurgeon (S.A.H.) and patency was assessed by preoperative and postoperative (30 minutes, daily) operative invasive and noninvasive techniques using an electromagnetic flow meter (for immediate postoperative) and Doppler, respectively. Of 112 rats, three and one postoperative deaths occurred within 24… Show more

“…Therapeutically, lumbar sympathectomy has been used to improve the patency after small blood vessel anastomosis, [17][18][19] while Hwiedi et al 20 demonstrated no difference in the microvascular patency rate after lumbar sympathectomy after femoral anastomosis in rats.…”

“…In the nerve‐transection group, the saphenous nerve was transected at the root. In the lumbar sympathectomy group, bilateral lumbar sympathetic trunks were removed with the procedures described by Hweidi 22 . Briefly, a longitudinal incision from the xiphoid process to the pubic symphysis was first made along the abdominal skin and the linea alba to open the abdominal cavity.…”
