“…The large percentage of carbon in the sample is due to lipids found on the outer layers of the eyes from tears and pores around the eyelid. On the basis of the appearance of fused spheres that are similar to the silica spheres obtained in the presence of surfactants, 22 we can suggest that the spheres in the human samples are a result of the surfactant (i.e., lipid material) acting as a template of silica/silicate growth. We have proposed, therefore, that excess silicon could also be a causative factor in CBK and silicon chelation therapy could play a role in treatment and prevention of the condition.…”
