Effect of Support on the Photocatalytic Degradation of Textile Effluents Using Nb2O5 and ZnO: Photocatalytic Degradation of Textile Dye

Abstract: Photocatalysis is an alternative for industrial effluents degradation, which is capable of mineralizing compounds. This study evaluated the photodegradation of textile dye using Nb 2 O 5 and ZnO supported on zeolite and activated carbon. ZnO/NaX was the most efficient catalyst, with color removal of 98% for dye solutions at 10 mg L -1 , following pseudo-first order kinetics.

“…The kinetic behavior exhibited in Figure 5 can be rationalized by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism. The L-H model is applied to photocatalyzed heterogeneous systems once evolves an adsorption pre-equilibrium followed by a relatively slow reaction toward the products, which is represented by Equation 4 (Konstantinou & Albanis, 2004;Brites et al, 2011):…”

“…However, these treatments are not satisfactory because of low efficiency or difficult application in industrial scale with large vinasse volumes. The development of new vinasse treatment methods became necessary and the heterogeneous photocatalysis, an advanced oxidation process (AOP), is an interesting option (Santana & Fernandes-Machado, 2008;Brites, Santana, & Fernandes-Machado, 2011). Light and TiO 2 catalyst have been used as a redox system capable of mineralizing organic pollutants (Robert & Malato, 2002) in wastewater from several types of industries: textile dyes (Garcia, Simionato, Silva, Nozaki, & Souza, 2009), petrol station wastewater (Ferrari-Lima, Marques, Fernandes-Machado, & Gimenes, 2013) and pesticide (Ahmed, Rasul, Brown, & Hashib, 2011).…”

“…Os catalisadores suportados (5%Nb2O5/NaX, 10%Nb2O5/NaX e 10%Nb2O5/NaA) foram preparados pelo método de impregnação úmida (Schmal, 2011) Quando a concentração do corante for baixa (< 50 mg.L -1 ), a reação pode ser considerada de pseudo-primeira ordem (BRITES et al, 2011), pois o valor de K.C do denominador da equação 2 será muito pequeno, então esta equação pode ser simplificada, conforme a equação 3:…”

“…Water contamination generated by dyes originating from the textile industries is a growing problem [1][2][3][4] since these pollutants typically show color and toxicity even in low concentration [5][6] . Several processes have been used to promote the water decontamination, among them physical and chemical processes.…”
