Effect of Sunlight on Photovoltaics as Optical Wireless Communication Receivers

Abstract: This paper explores the effects of sunlight on using a low-cost off-the-shelf silicon solar panel as an optical wireless communication (OWC) receiver. A receiver circuit structure has been proposed to maximize simultaneous energy harvesting and data communication performance. An equivalent circuit model of the solar panel for simultaneous energy harvesting and wireless optical communication is discussed. By using the solar panel model, the effects of varying sunlight conditions on the performance of the model … Show more

“…In this arrangement, a portion of the photovoltaic array may be cut out from its center in order to accomodate the telescope. We assume that the area of the hybrid aperture is larger than the footprint of the beam, and that the area of the aperture is large enough so that the loss in signal energy due to pointing error is negligible [32]. In this scenario, the channel coefficient h 0 can be treated as a deterministic quantity which is close to unity.…”

“…Despite the widespread use of solar cells to harness light outdoors, there has recently been a growing interest in using PV cells to harness light indoors to power electronic Internet of Things (IoT) devices [3]. In addition, PV cells are also suitable as receivers for visible light communication (VLC), which uses visible light to transmit data.…”
