Effect of styrene addition on chemically induced grafting of 4‐vinylbenzyl chloride onto low‐density polyethylene for anion exchange membrane preparation

Abstract: Anion exchange membranes were prepared from graft polymerization of 4‐vinylbenzyl chloride on low‐density polyethylene matrix and subsequent amination with trimethylamine solution. The graft polymerization was initiated by benzoyl peroxide instead of gamma ray radiation. The resulting membranes had insufficient anion exchange functional groups; however, this could be enhanced by adding 10% styrene to 4‐vinylbenzyl chloride in a graft polymerization reaction. Further addition of styrene resulted in a decrease o… Show more

“…In addition, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy further uncovers the structural features of PVB and PVSB (Figure d). Both PVB and PVSB exhibit the absorption bands at 1010, 1724, and in the region of 2880–3030 cm –1 , which are assigned to the C–O stretching vibration, carbonyl group, and C–H stretching vibration of the alkyl chain, respectively. The characteristic bands of the imidazole ring are featured with the stretching vibration of C–N at 1227 cm –1 , CN at 1492 cm –1 , CC at 1648 cm –1 , and N–H at 3110 cm –1 , as well as the in-plane ring C–H bending vibration (1081 cm –1 ) . These observed signals demonstrate that the imidazole ring is incorporated into the sp 3 carbon backbone of PVB and PVSB.…”

“…Furthermore, alkaline electrolyzers with anion exchange membranes (AEMs), which combine the high efficiency of devices based on membrane electrode assemblies with the advantages of alkaline technologies, mainly the use of non-precious electrocatalysts, have now been developed at a laboratory level. As advanced materials, AEMs have attracted a growing interest in several fields, 3,4 both energy and environment related, such as fuel cells, 5,6 heavy metal removal 7 and desalination. 8 Fixed-charge AEMs containing cationic groups (CGs) bounded to a polymer backbone have been reported by several authors.…”

“…Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used polymers in industry, as fiber, film and pipe, because it has many advantageous properties such as easy processing, high chemical resistance, flexibility, low density, adequate mechanical properties and low cost. Due to the low surface energy and lack of reactive functional groups on its molecular chains, PP is not compatible with a wide range of other polymers and fillers and also has printing and adhesion problems [1][2][3][4]. The methods that have been used for obtaining functional modification of PP include chlorination [5], hydroperoxidation [6], hydrogen abstraction from tertiary carbons, followed by ozonolysis [7], in situ copolymerization and grafting copolymerization [8].…”
