Effect of Structural Differences in Naringenin, Prenylated Naringenin, and Their Derivatives on the Anti-Influenza Virus Activity and Cellular Uptake of Their Flavanones

Abstract: Vaccines and antiviral drugs are widely used to treat influenza infection. However, they cannot rapidly respond to drug-resistant viruses. Therefore, new anti-influenza virus strategies are required. Naringenin is a flavonoid with potential for new antiviral strategies. In this study, we evaluated the antiviral effects of naringenin derivatives and examined the relationship between their cellular uptake and antiviral effects. Madin–Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells were infected with the A/PR/8/34 strain and ex… Show more

“…Natural dietary compounds, such as flavonoids and synthetic pharmacological agents, can arrest and/or reverse carcinogenesis—this process is often called chemoprevention. Recently, there has been much research focused on the biological activities of prenylated flavonoids, which very often exhibit stronger properties than those of non-prenyl parent flavonoids [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Xanthohumol ( 1 ), a prenylated chalcone naturally occurring in hops, is known for its various biological activities, including anticancer activity [ 2 , 4 , 31 ].…”

“…Prenylated flavonoids have been extensively studied and demonstrated diverse pharmacological properties, including potent antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. These effects highlight their potential as therapeutic agents in the treatment and management of a variety of conditions resulting from microbial infection, inflammation and oxidative stress [27][28][29][30]. In addition, bioactivity varies depending on the position and number of the prenyl groups.…”

“…The researchers concluded that the compound's steric effect plays a significant role in their effectiveness. The prenyl group, which is the substituent of naringenin, plays a significant role in its cell permeability [25]. The use of naringenin prevented Huh7.5 cells from infection with four different dengue virus strains.…”
