Effect of storage technology on the chemical composition of apples of the cultivar ‘Auksis’

Abstract: In this study, we evaluated the influence of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment and ultra-low oxygen (ULO)-controlled atmosphere conditions: 2.0% CO 2 and 1.0% O 2 (ULO1), and 2.5% CO 2 and 1.5% O 2 (ULO2) on the changes in chemical composition in the apples of one of the commercially available and the most consumerpreferred cultivar 'Auksis' during long-term storage. This study was conducted from 2012 to 2014 at the Institute of Horticulture, Latvia University of Agriculture in Dobele. The results of the … Show more

“…preventing microbial access and development[53]. The content of polyphenolic compounds in apples also depends on the agricultural and climatic conditions during growth as well as on storage conditions[54].The TPC obtained in this work is comparable to the data provided by previous studies: 221-476 mg/100g d.m. in 'Jonagold'[23], 564-748 mg/100 g d.m.…”

“…The literature reports both increase and decrease in TPC in fruit after harvest. Polyphenol content was observed to have increased in 'Auksis' apples cold-stored in normal and controlled atmosphere (ultra-low oxygen), including after applying 1-MCP[54]. The same was noted during the storage of e.g.…”

“…According Sethi et al, antioxidant activity strongly correlated with the amount of phenolic compounds [ 33 ]. The content of phenolics, and therefore antioxidant activity, can be influenced by various factors such as pre-harvest meteorological conditions, cultural practices, maturity, and harvesting methods [ 34 , 35 ]. DPPH scavenging activity decreased from 44–20 mM Trolox (equivalent) g −1 (depending on variety) to 11.7–3.6 mM Trolox g −1 (depending on variety) during fruit ripening, while ABTS scavenging activity from 4.5–2.6 mM Trolox g −1 to 1.4–0.9 mM Trolox g −1 [ 35 ].…”

Significantly lower starch content ( Figure 1 ) and DPPH antioxidant radical scavenging activity ( Table 1 ) in fruits from apple trees grafted on P 22 super dwarfing rootstock was found.…”
