Effect of stocking density on growth performance of monosex tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with Indian spinach (Basella alba) in a recirculating aquaponic system

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to compare effect of stocking density on growth performance of monosex tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with Indian spinach (Basella alba) in a recirculating aquaponic system. The experiment was set-up for 8 weeks under 4 treatments with three replications, where stocking density of tilapia were 30, 50, 70 and 90 fish/tank (300 litre) in treatments T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively. Water from the tank was recirculated through a vegetable growing tray. Each of the tray was 0.15 m 3 in … Show more

“…In other AP systems, the mortality of Koi Carp increased (from 0% to 2%) when the density of fish increased from 2.1 kg m -3 to 2.8 kg m -3 [40]. Similar results were found by Rayhan et al [41], who observed a significant increase in the mortality (from 0% to 7.2%) of juveniles of tilapia with increasing stocking density from 0.52 kg m -3 to 1.58 kg m -3 . However, considering the available information for fish cultured in different systems, a direct relationship between stocking density and mortality was not fully demonstrated [37, 44, 46].…”

“…In accordance with our findings, Hussain et al [40] have reported that the SGR of Koi Carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) (initial weight of 4.24 g) cultured in AP was strongly reduced with increasing density of fish from 1.4 kg m -3 to 2.1 kg m -3 to 2.8 kg m -3 . Other authors observed a significant reduction of SGR with increasing stocking density in juveniles of tilapia farmed in AP [41].…”

“…Although there are different studies investigating the effects of the stocking density on various behavioral and physiological changes in rodents (Arakawa, 2005;Smith et al, 2005;Whitaker et al, 2007), domestic hens (Simsek et al, 2014;Eugen et al, 2019), quail (Ayasan et al, 2000;Toplu and Fidan, 2008;Bahsi et al, 2016), fishes (Jia et al, 2016;Rayhan et al, 2018), pigs (Cornale et al, 2015;Kim et al, 2016;Larsen et al, 2018), broiler (Qaid et al, 2016;Li et al, 2019) and primates (Yamagiwa, 1999;Duncan et al, 2013), no studies have investigated its effect on antioxidant capacity. In the present study, therefore, the effect of the stocking density on the antioxidant capacity in the rats was examined.…”
