Effect of statin on arginine metabolites in treated HIV-infection

Abstract: Background and aims Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an inhibitor of nitric oxide and an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We examined the effect of statin on ADMA in HIV+ patients on stable ART, and whether such an effect contributes to the favorable changes on carotid intima media thickness. Methods This is a secondary analysis of SATURN-HIV, in which HIV+ adults on stable ART with HIV-1 RNA< 1,000 copies/mL and LDL-cholesterol <130 mg/dL were randomized to 10 mg daily rosuvastatin o… Show more

“…Overall, 172 participants were enrolled in this study and included in this analysis: 57 PHIV, 59 HEU, and 56 HIV− children. Detailed patient and maternal characteristics have been previously described (21). Median [Q1, Q3] age was 7.8 years [6.39, 8.84], 55% of participants were girls, median BMI was 15.2 kg/m 2 [14.38, 15.81] and 24% had food insecurity.…”

“…Li et al revealed that simvastatin rapidly reduced plasma ET-1 concentrations in patients with chronic coronary heart disease: two-week simvastatin therapy reduced ET-1 by 44%, whereas no changes in ET-1 concentration were detected in the placebo group [ 37 ]. Moreover, scientific data indicate the ability of hydrophilic statins, such as rosuvastatin, to significantly reduce serum ADMA levels [ 47 ].…”

“…У ВИЧ-инфицированных пациентов, принимающих АРТ, назначение розувастатина статистически значимо уменьшало уровень ассиметричного диметиларгинина, оказывая защитное действие на эндотелий сосудов [19]. Розувастатин у ВИЧ-инфицированных вызывает иммунную активацию и приостанавливает развитие утолщения комплекса интима-медиа каротидных артерий.…”
