Hesperidin is an exogenous antioxidant obtained from citrus fruits. Recent studies have demonstrated its therapeutic and biological properties in ameliorating oxidative stress through scavenging for free radical species. The study was aimed at evaluating the effect of hesperidin on oestrus synchronisation and fertility parameters in thermally stressed Yankasa ewes. The study was carried out during the dry and hot seasons of the year in Vom, Plateau State, Nigeria. Forty-six (46) maiden Yankasa ewes with average body condition score of 2.5 and aged between 5–8 months, weighed between 15–20 kg were randomly allocated into two groups of twenty-seven ewes each. Group A served as the treatment group, which were given oral hesperidin supplement (200 mg/kg body weight) on a weekly basis throughout the experiment. Group B severed as the control animals, which received 10 mL of mix dimethyl sulphate and normal saline throughout the study. Three rams aged 18 months to 2 years, weighing between 35–40kg were used as teaser and breeding rams. The time of onset of oestrus, oestrus duration, oestrus response rate, control internal drug release retention rate, pregnancy and lambing rates, fecundity, gestational length, lambing weight and postpartum oestrus interval were evaluated. The results obtained showed that hesperidin had significant (P < 0.05) effects on the CIDR retention (95 7.10% and 75.0 ± 7.1%), oestrus response rate (ORR) (80.00 ± 14.1% and 65.0 ± 7.1%), onset of oestrus (2.8 ± 1.0 and 6.0 ± 1.4 days), duration of oestrus (30.5 ± 2.1 and 25.6 ± 2.4 hours), pregnancy rate (85% and 75%), lambing rate (95% and 80%), lambing weight (2.52 ± 0.69 kg and 2.24 ± 0.73), postpartum oestrus interval (37.88 ± 1.13 and 39.33 ± 0.67 days), and gestation length (149.38 ± 1.39 and 151.4 ± 1.14 days) for the treatment and control groups respectively. The present study demonstrated that hesperidin administration increased significantly (P < 0.05) the TOO, ORR, OD, CIDR retention, lambing weight, pregnancy and lambing rates in thermally stressed Yankasa ewes.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was characterize some productive and reproductive parameters in Syrian Awassi ewe lambs during different age stages. Thirty Syrian Awassi ewe lambs aged around 3 months were divided equally into 2 groups, high and low growing to identify productive and reproductive parameters during different stages. Blood samples were collected to determine progesterone and leptin concentrations. Daily milk samples were collected to determine the average daily production. At puberty, average body weight of higher growing was higher (48.4 kg) than de crescimento low growing (42.8 kg). Average age at puberty was 359.5 and 394.9 days for high and low groups, respectively with no differences. Mating, lambing and fecundity rates were similar among groups. Progesterone concentration was very low and increased rapidly at puberty with a sharp increase during pregnancy, followed by a noticeable decrease post lambing. There were individual variations in leptin concentration with no clear trend in groups. Average leptin concentration at puberty was 2.42 and 2.50 ng mL -1 for higher and low groups, respectively with no difference. Average daily milk production was higher for the higher group (1.495 g day for low grups. Thus, the lambs growing alter produtive and reproductive parameters.Keywords: leptin; milk production; progesterone; puberty.Parâmetros produtivos e reprodutivos de cordeiros Awassi da Síria de taxa rápida e lenta de crescimento RESUMO. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar alguns parâmetros produtivos e reprodutivos em cordeiros sírios Awassi com diferentes estpagio de crescimento. Trinta cordeiros Awassi com cerca de 3 meses de idade foram divididos igualmente em dois grupos: cordeiros de crescimento rápido e lento, para identificar os parâmetros produtivo e reprodutivo, durante diferentes estágios. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue para determinar a concentração de progesterona e leptina. Também, foram coletadas amostras diárias de leite para determinar a média de produção diária. Na puberdade, a média geral dos pesos dos cordeiros de crescimento rápido foi maior (48,4 kg) comparado aos de crescimento lento (42,8 kg). A idade média da puberdade foi de 359,5 e 394,9 dias para o grupo rápido e lento, sem diferenças. As taxas de acasalamento, parto e fecundidade foram semelhantes entres os grupos. A concentração de progesterona foi baixa e aumentou rápidamente na puberdade, com um aumento acentuado durante a gravidez, seguido por um notável decrescimento no pós-parto. Houve variações individuais na concentração de leptina sem uma clara tendência nos grupos. A média de concentração de leptina na puberdade foi de 2,42 e 2,50 ng mL -1 para o grupo de higher and low, respectivamente. A produção diária de leite foi maior para o grupo de crescimento rápido (1.495 g dia -1) comparada com 1.077g dia -1 para os animais de crescimento fraco. Assim, a taxa de crescimento alterou os parâmetros produtivos e reprodutivos.Palavras-chave: Leptina; produção de leite; progesterona; puberdade.

The goal of this study was to assess reproductive performance, estrus signs, and lamb's birth weight in Ossimi ewes treated with organic selenium and Nano-selenium under Upper Egyptian conditions. In this experiment, a total of 30 ewes were divided into three equal groups (10 ewes /each). All of the animals were given intra-vaginal sponges (IVS) impregnated with medroxy-progesterone-acetate (MAP, 40 mg) for 14 days. Then, in the G1: (CG) control group, and the ewes in G2 (SeG) were given organic selenium 3 mg/ewe orally for 14 days from insert IVS, whereas the ewes in G3: (N-SeG) were given Nano-selenium 0.2 mg/animal orally for 14 days from insert IVS. Also, after 50±5 days of parturition (post-partum), the ewes divided randomly into 3 equal groups (10 ewes/each), and managed with the same previous treatments. The results showed that ewes given organic selenium and Nano-selenium had longer (P<0.01) in estrus duration and took a shorter (P<0.01) period to show estrus than control group in both the first service and post-partum. In addition, during the first service and post-partum, the estrus response in SeG and N-SeG were significantly higher (P<0.05) than CG. However, the intensities of estrus signs as swollen vulvar lips and redness of the vaginal membranes were clearly apparent on the ewes in SeG and N-SeG compared to the CG. Also, the body weight of lambs born from ewes treated with organic selenium and Nano-selenium increased significantly (P<0.01) compared to the control group. The body weight of the lambs in N-SeG was higher (P<0.01) after 15 days of parturition than in CG. In conclusion, treatment with organic selenium and Nano-selenium could improve the reproductive performance, estrus signs, and lamb birth weight in ewes under Upper Egyptian climatic conditions.
