Effect of sperm concentration in an ejaculate on morphometric traits of spermatozoa in Duroc boars

Abstract: The experimental material consisted of 75 ejaculates collected form 8 Duroc boars. The ejaculates were divided into three groups according to sperm concentration in an ejaculate. An ejaculate was obtained from each boar monthly and it was used to make microscopic preparations to examine spermatozoa morphology. In each preparation morphometric measurements were taken of fifteen randomly selected spermatozoa characterized by normal morphology. The following measurements of spermatozoa were taken: length and widt… Show more

“…Ejaculates of Duroc boars usually produce fewer insemination doses than ejaculates of other breeds. This is connected with the predisposition of Duroc boars to produce ejaculates with low volumes and high sperm concentration, as confirmed by results of numerous studies (Leidinger et al 1998, Park & Yi 2002, Kondracki 2003, Smital et al 2004, Kondracki et al 2011. Therefore, it is more advantageous to use two-breed reproduction males derived from the Duroc breed, rather than pure-bred Duroc boars.…”

“…This is not only significant in the context of insemination dose production. It has been found out that ejaculate sperm concentration is connected with morphological traits of spermatozoa (Kondracki et al, 2011(Kondracki et al, , 2013aRijsselaere et al, 2004) and this in turn affects the fertilization potential of the spermatozoa (Chenoweth, 2005;de Paz et al, 2011;Hirai et al, 2001;Ostermeier et al, 2001). Effects of high collection frequency on the physical characteristics of ejaculates have also been observed by Pruneda et al (2005).…”

“…It is conditioned both by genetic and environmental factors which affect the quality and quantity of generated semen (Holt et al, 1997). Some of their studies have revealed variability in morphometric sperm parameters in relation to sperm concentration in ejaculates of dogs (Rijsselaere et al, 2004), stallions (Davis et al, 1993) and boars (banaszewska et al, , Kondracki et al, 2011. only morphologically wellformed spermatozoa are capable of this.…”
