Effect of soybean-meal-based diets on the growth and survival rate of the Indian major carp, Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.)

Abstract: The effect of varying dietary levels of defatted soybean meal on the growth and survival of mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton) was investigated. In a feeding trial of 90 days, three experimental diets containing soybean meal at 200, 300 and 400 g kg−1 level of incorporation were fed to quadruplicate groups of 10 fish each. The conventional feed used in India, consisting of a mixture of groundnut oil cake and rice bran in 1 : 1 ratio served as the control. Best growth in terms of percentage weight gain, speci… Show more

“…However, in other studies with this species, solvent‐extracted soybean meal was ineffective in replacing about 60% of fishmeal in the feed (Pogmaneerat and Watanabe, 1993; Refstie et al., 1997). Soybean meal diets for carp have been investigated by various authors (Deepak et al., 2005; Jose et al., 2006) but with differing results. Deepak et al.…”

“…Soybean protein has been used successfully for some species such as Atlantic cod, Gadus gadus (Hansen et al, 2006;Refstie et al, 2006b), Indian carp, Cirrhinus mrigala (Jose et al, 2006), three genera of catfishes (Usmani et al, 2003;Evans et al, 2005), yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata (Shimeno et al, 1997), Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (Kikuchi, 1999), and Egyptian sole, Solea aegyptiaca (Bonaldo et al, 2006). In some species, morphological changes have been noted in fish fed high levels of soy protein.…”

“…Meade (1972) also mentioned that AAs coming from SM are highly available. SM feeding trials conducted with carp resulted in good fish growth (Jose et al 2006;Bergamin et al 2011;Yesilayer et al 2011). Nevertheless, processing of SM affects replacement level of fishmeal in diets without hampering fish performance (Tibaldi et al 2006), and supplementation with methionine, lysine and threonine is needed when SM is used as main protein source in diets due to AA composition Glencross et al 2007b).…”
