Effect of some purified plasma proteins on collagen biosynthesis in vitro

Abstract: The haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex activates the incorporation of 14C-proline into the collagen hydroxyproline of rat or human dermis slices incubated in vitro. The same complex decreases the incorporation of proline into the structural glycoproteins of the connective tissue. None of the other plasma proteins studied had any effect.

“…Anti-inflammatory activity of steroidal antiinflammatory agents has been partly ascribed to increased cq ant• levels induced by these steroids [22]. Haptoglobin, another acute-phase reactant, has been found to inhibit proline incorporation into glycoproteins of connective tissue in vitro [23]. Since the anti-inflammatory effectiveness of endogenous anti-inflammatory substances, released into the circulation during inflammation, has recently received much attention [18,24], we tested the hypothesis that the spontaneous remission of 6-SAI arthritis could be due to such an endogenous mechanism.…”
