Effect of single to triple dose DEC on microfilaremics up to 5 years

Abstract: A 5-year study was conducted with 200 selected microfilaremic subjects bearing Mean microfilarial density (MMD) of 11.6 from 16 small foothill villages around Susunia Hill, Bankura, West Bengal during June 2001 to May 2002. All of them were treated with a single dose (6 mg/kg body weight) to triple dose diethylcarbamazine (DEC). On day 180, 365, 730, 1,095, 1,460, and 1,825, recurrence of microfilaremia were 0.0%, 6.0%, 15.5% (6 + 9.5), 27% (15.5 + 11.5), 42% (27 + 15), and 49% (42 + 7), respectively, and corr… Show more

“…Despite the fact that single-dose DEC treatment was found effective for reduction of microfilaremia and parasite load, but it is not always sufficient to eliminate all the microfilariae, especially when mean microfilariae density was high (>40; Chandra and Paramanik 2008). Research findings suggest that logistical and operational aspects (Ramaiah et al 2000a, b) and parasite dynamics in humans in relation to the number of annual treatments (Das et al 2001) have significant implications on the program to eliminate LF.…”

“…The study area is endemic for LF. 16 Most of the married women of the area are deprived of higher education often with very little awareness about health and hygiene. Mainly they are housewives but a large proportion (mostly the backward poorer section) also work as low income daily labourers in unorganised sectors (like farming, construction, housekeeping etc.)…”

“…quinquefasciatus is the principal transmitter in most regions [24][25][26] with a role played by other mosquito species as well [27,28] . To eliminate the disease, along with the application of chemotherapeutic strategies [29] , a vector control strategy is vital [8,23] . The present study was intended to evaluate the larvicidal role of leaf extract of V. spinosa on filarial vector Cx.…”
