Effect of silver on the catalytic hydrodechlorination of tetrachloromethane over silica-supported palladium-silver catalysts

Abstract: Two silica-supported palladium based catalysts characterized by overall metal loadings 10 wt.%, and atomic Pd : Ag ratios of 100 : 0 and 70 : 30, were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation, subjected to reduction in hydrogen and characterized by XRD. It was found that incipient wetness co-impregnation of silica resulted in the formation of a catalyst characterized by relatively small metal crystallites (~11 nm) and significant extent of Pd-Ag alloying. The catalytic performance was investigated in the hyd… Show more

“…These results are quite similar to the obtained in our previous studies with monometallic Pd catalysts supported on activated carbon under the same working conditions [12,20]. Besides, the current catalysts showed slightly higher conversion than those reported by other authors on the HDC of tetrachloromethane (TTCM) with AgPd-based catalysts at low temperatures (125 ºC) [30,63]. According to the literature, Ag is able to adsorb TCM and to break C-Cl bonds, while Pd in the vicinity promotes dissociative chemisorption of H2, providing H atoms to the Ag sites [30,64].…”
