Effect of Silicon on Growth and Temperature Stress Tolerance of Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Corditas’

Abstract: Effect of silicon (Si) nutrition on growth and temperature stress tolerance of Nephrolepis exaltata 'Corditas' grown in a soilless substrate was examined. In vitro-grown acclimatized plantlets were transplanted into the pots containing a coir-based substrate. A nutrient solution containing 0, 50, or 100 mg・L -1 Si was supplied through a drip-irrigation system. After 5 months of cultivation, Si-treated and -untreated plants were grown at 10, 25, or 40 ± 1°C under a 12 h photoperiod with 530 µmol・m PPFD and 60% … Show more

“…Our findings demonstrate that exogenous Si application can mitigate the adverse effects pf heat stress in tomato plants by improving plant growth attributes, such as shoot length and biomass production. Similar findings were previously reported in Cucumis sativus L. [64], Nephrolepis exaltata L. [65], and Oryza sativa L. [66]. However, little is known about this phenomenon in tomato plants.…”

“…The triggering of both molecules can lead to the disruption of activities of antioxidant enzymes [80]. Our results were similar those observed after Si application on Hordeum vulgare L. [80], Cicer arietinum L. [80], and Nephrolepis exaltata [65].…”

“…Accumulation of other macro- and micro- nutrients was also modulated due to the Si and/or NaCl treatments. Either higher or lower content of other essential elements observed between the treatments instigate the involvement of Si in the metal homeostasis [ 37 ]. Macronutrients are essential constituents for the building blocks of plants.…”

“…Hence, it is necessary to search for a potent cheap and ecofriendly alleviator to nullify heat stress hazards. It was reported that silicon (Si) enhances the tolerance of several plants against temperature stress [38,39]. It has been reported that Si deposited in the epidermal and vascular tissue walls of stems and leaves in most plant species, especially monocots, affects the physiological properties of plants [40,41].…”
