Effect of Short-Term Fixation on Perceived Size of a Circle

Abstract: The apparent size of a circle was measured after it was fixated by 2 male college Ss for periods from 50 msec. to 10,000 msec. The circle shrank for practically all time periods. The amount of the shrinkage increased to 6,000 msec. for S2 and 8,000 msec. for S1. It is possible that fixation effects influence the apparent size of various visual phenomena.

Mueller-Lyer illustrations produced by hue contrast were used to investigate age differences with participants ranging in age from 20 to 79 years. As expected, there was no age difference in the magnitude of the illusion when the Mueller-Lyer figure was produced by hue contrast. A significant main effect of hue was found, with no interaction between hue and age. These findings support Pollack's nondevelopmental explanation for age effects on Type I illusions.

The purpose of this study was to explore a velocity dependent distortion of visual space which may influence the ability of vehicle operators to accurately judge the distance of objects in visual space. Two experiments were conducted in which observers were driven past (facing either frontward or rearward) pairs of wooden stakes (space between endpoints of stake pairs either filled or unfilled) and asked to judge the distance between endpoints. Results showed that observers greatly underestimated the distance between endpoints of stake pairs when the space between endpoints was unfilled versus filled. Also, underestimation was greatest when observers were facing forward. Results are discussed in terms of practical considerations.
