“…Testosterone levels may be elevated in the late summer because male rattlesnakes undergo sperm formation at this time (Schuett, 1992). During sperm formation, the renal sex segment, which supplies the sperm with nutrients, become hypertro phied under androgenic control (Prasad and Sanyal, 1969). Males store sperm produced in the late summer for use during the following spring mating period (Schuett, 1992).…”

“…Administration of melatonin to pinealectomized lizards counteracted the effect of pinealectomy suggesting that in this species melatonin may be one of the antigonadotropic compounds produced by the pineal. The results also indi cate that melatonin administered to sham-operated as well as to pinealectomized lizards, lowered the androgen pro duction of testes, an effect which was clearly reflected by the decreased height of the renal sex segment (an androgen-de pendent organ [12]) and the weight of the peripheral repro ductive organ (kidney and vas deferens). In this regard, a di rect inhibitory action of melatonin and serotonin on testicu lar production of androgen in vitro in the rat has been re ported [2].…”

“…Secretions from the SSK provide sustenance for mature sperm (Cuellar et al, 1972). The SSK is an indicator of sexual activity in male reptiles, because it becomes hypertrophied in response to testosterone (Prasad and Sanyal, 1969). The response of the SSK to elevated T levels allows researchers to determine the time of year in which T is elevated.…”
