Effect of Several Germination Conditions on Total P, Phytate P, Phytase, and Acid Phosphatase Activities and Inositol Phosphate Esters in Rye and Barley

Abstract: Two assays were conducted to study the evolution of rye and barley phosphatases (phytase and acid phosphatase) and the degradation of its substrates (inositol phosphate esters) during seed germination. In this manner we could obtain a low-phytate, endogenous phosphatase rich ingredient to be used in animal nutrition. In the first assay, the seeds were soaked for 1 and 14 h and germinated for 3 and 5 days with and without the addition of gibberellic acid (GA3). In the second assay, the seeds were soaked for 1 h… Show more

“…This implies that Pi has an important role not only in determining plant growth and yield but also during earlier stages of seed germination and seedling growth. The importance of Pi during seed germination may result from Pi enhancing the uptake of nutrients or, alternatively, reducing the need of Pi that stored in seeds (Centeno et al 2001).…”

“…Phytase activity increases considerably during germination [279], but there are great differences between different cereals. Barley has shown an increase of phytase activity up to 11 times of the original one [280], while phytases in wheat, rye and oats increased 4.5, 2.5 and 9 times from the original activity [277].…”

“…During germination, phytase breaks down phytate and releases phosphate and inositol (Bohn et al, 2008;Centeno et al, 2001;EL-Mahdy and EL-Sebaiy, 1982;Kumar et al, 2010;Reddy et al, 1982). However, to human health, phytate has advantages and disadvantages.…”
