Effect of several flavonoid-containing plant preparations on activity of mitochondrial ATP-dependent potassium channel

Abstract: Flavonoid-containing plant preparations (water soluble extracts of Pentaphylloides fruticosa [Extralife], Emblica officinalis Gaerth [Amla], and Bergenia crassifolia [Bergenia]) produced a dose-dependent and tissue-specific effect on activity of mitochondrial ATP-dependent potassium channel. The effect of these preparations was biphasic (activation and inhibition). The activating effect of Extralife was one order of magnitude higher than that of Amla and Bergenia and was observed in a wider concentration range… Show more

“…Stress protective effect of extract was evaluated in rats in the model of immobilization stress. Significant turnover in stress‐induced inhibition in adrenal weight, thymus involution and bleeding from gastric red spots was observed after administration of B. crassifolia leaves extract . Activation of mitochondrial ATP‐dependent potassium channel (mitoKATP) and increase in ATP‐dependent K + transport in mitochondria were an essential stage initiating the adaptive response of organism under extreme conditions (e. g. hypoxia).…”

“…Menthol [5-methyl-2-(propan-2-yl) cyclohexan-1-ol], is a component of essential oils such as eucalyptus and lemongrass and is responsible for the characteristic smell and flavor of Mentha longifloia that has been used traditionally in Asia for the treatment of respiratory illnesses. Menthol occurs in four isomers namely, (+)-and (−)-menthol, (+)-and (−)-neomenthol, (+)-and (−)-neoisomenthol, and (+)-and (−)-isomenthol; however, (−)-menthol (L-menthol) is the major form that exists in nature [165]. Menthol is used to treat several conditions including the common cold and other respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, as well as musculoskeletal pain [166].…”

“…Moreover, the floating-time of the rats supplemented with 100 mg/kg extract was considerably augmented after 21 days of treatment, whereas in the other group treated with liposome-encapsulated-extract the swimming-time was increased after seven days of treatment, under extreme circumstances (e.g., hypoxia) [164], because, under hypoxic conditions, the adaptive response of an organism activates mitoK ATP channel and increases the ATP-dependent potassium transport in mitochondria. Mironova et al explored the the activation ability of mitoK ATP channel through water-soluble flavonoid-containing plant preparations of Bergenia (Bergenia crassifolia) in a rat model [165].…”
