Effect of selenium on growth and antioxidative system of yeast cells

Abstract: Selenium exhibits health-promoting properties in humans and animals. Therefore, the development of selenium-enriched dietary supplements has been growing worldwide. However, it may also exhibit toxicity at higher concentrations, causing increased oxidative stress. Different species of yeasts may exhibit different tolerances toward selenium. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine the effect of selenium on growth and on the antioxidative system in Candida utilis ATCC 9950 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae AT… Show more

“…Yeast cells under different kinds of stress may generate abundant GSH, which is involved in the cell protection against the damage from O 2− . The high level of GSH could be a marker of an acute oxidative stress [48]. The data suggest that under optimal conditions, mannitol, the synthesis pathway of which is branched from the glycolysis at the glucose-6-phosphate stage, is of great importance for the development of Y. lipolytica [16].…”

“…It occurs in many proteins, changing their conformational structure and functional activity. The right dose of selenium also affects the occurrence of changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione [7].…”

“…Selenium is an element found in many enzymes, especially those with antioxidant activity: glutathione peroxidase (GPx), iodothyronine deiodinase (DIO) and thioredoxin reductase (TRxR). These enzymes prevent the formation of hydrogen peroxide and the peroxidation of phospholipid cell membranes [6,7].…”

“…Glutathione is one of the most essential redox-scavenging compounds in yeast cells. The ratio of the two different forms, reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG, glutathione disulfide) and the GSSG:GSH rate predicts the physiological and oxidative state of the cell, with healthy cells having lower GSSG:GSH values [49][50][51]. The biosynthesis of great amounts of glutathione correlates with the yeast oxidative stress resistance.…”
