Effect of Selenium on Expression of Apoptosis-Related Genes in Cryomedia of Mice Ovary after Vitrification

Abstract: Introduction. Freezing of ovarian tissue is used for preservation of fertility. The freezing-thawing process is accompanied by oxidative stress and induction of apoptosis. Apoptosis is a complex process that has been studied in animal models. The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of selenium on suppression of apoptosis during vitrification-thawing process of mice ovary via studying expression of apoptosis-related genes, and also, we aimed to design statistical models for the roles of single g… Show more

“…Natural antioxidants derived from medicinal plants are composed of polyphenols (including phenolic acids and flavonoids), carotenoids and vitamins [10]. These natural antioxidants are recognized for their ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) [11][12][13]. Oxidative stress is a harmful event that is responsible for development of a wide range of disease [14].…”

“…Apoptosis is a physiological phenomenon which is initiated under the regulation of a series of genes when cells are exposed to drug or external stimuli ( Garcia-Caballero et al, 2017 ; Nori-Garavand et al, 2020 ). One of the main regulatory pathways of apoptosis is death receptor-mediated pathway, also known as extrinsic pathway.…”

“…Cryopreservation can trigger the apoptosis mechanism in post-thaw sperm [ 19 , 20 ]. Apoptosis is a physiological and biological process that is crucial for normal development and homeostasis maintenance [ 21 , 22 ]. Apoptosis is largely regulated by the activation of a class of cysteine proteases called caspases, and apoptosis deregulation can lead to infertile sperm [ 23 ].…”
