Effect of scapular stabilization exercise program in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome: a systematic review

Abstract: Scapular stabilization approaches have been a mainstay of therapeutic training programs in the recent past for patients with subacromial impingement syndrome, whereas its contributions solely in the clinical outcome of reducing shoulder pain and disability are largely unclear. This systematic review aims to evaluate and summarize the best evidence regarding the role of scapular stabilization interventions in alleviating shoulder dysfunction among subjects with subacromial impingement syndrome. Six reviewers in… Show more

“…Motor skill learning is used regularly in rehabilitation for individuals in pain. [51][52][53] The results of studies exploring the impact of pain on motor learning remain conflicting, and this may be due to factors that influence pain experience such as attention, cognition and motivation. This systematic review will provide insights into the interference of pain on motor learning and discuss characteristics of pain experience and of motor skill learning that may influence such interference.…”

“…In shoulder pain conditions, both have been reported as possibly altered, namely by decreased and/or timing changed activation of lower trapezius (LT), middle trapezius (MT) and serratus anterior (SA) [ 38 , 41 , 79 , 80 ] or by increased [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 79 ] or decreased UT activity [ 81 , 82 , 83 ]. Impairments in the activity of levator scapulae [ 19 , 84 , 85 ] and pectoralis minor [ 84 , 85 , 86 ] muscles were also reported.…”

“…NSAIDs and icing are often used for pain control and patients may be referred for physical therapy [112,113,116]. Physical therapy will often incorporate multiple modalities including heating/icing, manual therapy, and specific exercises focusing on strengthening of the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers which has been shown to improve pain and disability [113,117]. Patients with continued symptoms after 4-6 weeks may be considered for subacromial corticosteroid injections which have been shown to provide significant shortterm relief [116,118].…”
