Effect of Scandium Doping on The Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Behavior of Al-3Mg Alloy in Neutral Chloride Solutions

Abstract: Scandium addition significantly alters the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of Al-3 Mg alloys. The addition of 0.3% - 0.4% scandium with 0.14% zirconium has a beneficial effect on the corrosion resistance of the alloy under smoothly stirred condition. Addition of 0.3% Sc significantly suppresses corrosion under dynamic flow conditions. It also creates an optimal strengthening effect on the alloys. The corrosion resistance is attributed to the strong passive layer of Sc2O<s… Show more

“…Addition of Sc to Al alloys results in formation of coherent strengthening particles and acts as a potential grain refiner. The Sc efficiently combines with Al and forms Al3Sc precipitate which can significantly improve the strength [9][10]. Similar result was documented recently for Erbium alloying, a grain refiner from the works of Y.…”

“…However, the effect of Sc addition on the corrosion behavior of Al alloy is in confusion. Most of works on the corrosion properties of Sc-containing alloys elaborate that Sc has a beneficial effect on corrosion resistance caused by the formation of Sc 2 O 3 on the alloy surface [9][10][11][12]. Large Al 3 Sc phase have been found having lower oxidation rate than the other intermetallic compounds and nobler than pure Al.…”
